DStv Extra View is a system or way to watch different DStv channels at the same time on up to three decoders under one subscription. Furthermore, it allows you to record different shows on all connected extra view decoders at the same time.
This is the smartest way designed to keep every family member happy. It means a father can watch his sports while the wife is watching her favourite tv shows and the kids watching their cartoons in separate rooms at the same time. No more fighting for the remote. In addition, it’s a great way to save money. Instead of paying for 3 subscriptions of 3 decoders, you will be paying for one subscription on all 3 decoders.
What do I need for a DStv Xtraview Installation?
There are a number of ways to connect or install your decoders to Extra View setup. Usually the installation is determined by the type of house or premises in which you are going to install your decoders. More so, the types of decoders you might have also determines the type of installation and equipment required.
For instance, If it is a stand-alone house or an apartment that uses its own satellite dish. The recommended installation requires two or three DStv xtraview capable decoders, 1 satellite dish with xtraview capable LNB, two TV sets or more, Dstv subscription and F-type connectors.
Then if you are staying at a communal setup whereby you will be sharing the same dish with other apartments/houses. The Smart Switch will be required instead of a Smart LNB.
Please also note that a heartbeat splitter or a diplexer might be needed on both instances above if you have a decoder(s) that uses RF port for extra view communication. Further, If you are techy and going to perform the extra view installation by yourself, you will also need a satellite signal finder machine.

How Does Extra View Work?
DStv Extra View works by connecting two or three decoders on the same house/premises. There will be a main decoder which is the primary and the other decoder(s) will be regarded as the secondary decoders. The primary decoder will be the one carrying a bouquet subscription and sharing it with the secondary decoder(s)
These decoders will be linked together by a way which is called a heartbeat. The heartbeat is sent from the primary DStv decoder to the second and third DStv decoder every 30 seconds through RF signals. This allows the communication between these extra view decoders
When the Extra View secondary decoder stops receiving heartbeat for more than 5 minutes, it will stop showing video and audio until the heartbeat is restored. This means you can’t take the secondary decoder to another house since it requires a heartbeat from the primary decoder in order for it to work.
A point to note, after the installation is done, the decoders are supposed to be activated for extra view setup functionality. Otherwise you can be billed for multiple subscriptions.
